I Survive Retrenchment and Here is How I Did It (by Lup Wai)

I had been thriving in my career, and with a growing family, it seemed like we were on the right track. But suddenly, the stability I took for granted vanished, leaving us with the daunting prospect of facing financial strain with a newborn on the way. Losing my job while pregnant with my second child was a jolt I never anticipated.

The news of being retrenched hit hard. Worry and anxiety consumed me, but I knew I had to find a way to cope. I couldn't allow the stress and anxiety to affect my unborn child. Moreover, I had to take care of my firstborn as well. I started to redirect my focus. With determination, I decided to pull him out of childcare and homeschool him during this transitional period.

Financial adjustments were inevitable. Dining out and traveling became luxuries of the past. Surprisingly, we found solace in this newfound simplicity. We cherished the extra time spent with our son, realizing that sometimes the best moments come from the simplest pleasures.

When my second child arrived, I embraced the role of homeschooling both of them. I started visiting different schools to learn on the job how to teach young children. Beyond that, I tapped into my entrepreneurial spirit. I began a small business from home, organizing kids' workshops and selling homeschool products at booths. It was a leap of faith, but necessity became the mother of invention. My children would follow me wherever I went, even to business meetings.

The journey was anything but easy, but it was undeniably memorable. Each day brought its own set of challenges, but it also brought growth and resilience. Looking back, I'm grateful for the twists and turns that led me to where I am today.

As Debasish Mridha aptly said, "Remember that everything that is happening around you, good or bad, is in some way conspiring to help you."

Looking back, I realize that losing my job was actually a blessing in disguise. It opened doors to new opportunities and sparked personal growth within me. Through this experience, I learned the true meaning of resilience and resourcefulness, qualities that have since become invaluable assets in my life. Most importantly, it deepened my appreciation for every precious moment spent with my family. As a result, I've cultivated a strong and fulfilling relationship with my children, one that I cherish above all else.

Today, I find joy in sharing my experiences with other women, particularly fellow mothers, to reassure them that it's normal to feel rejected when life doesn't unfold as planned. Motherhood comes with its share of challenges and pain points. From sleepless nights to juggling multiple responsibilities, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and discouraged.

However, amidst these struggles, there is also immense beauty and fulfillment in motherhood. The unconditional love shared between a mother and her child is unmatched. Witnessing your children grow and thrive, experiencing their milestones, and knowing that you play a vital role in shaping their lives are priceless moments that make every hardship worthwhile.
