I Survived Relocation and Here's How I Did it (by Joy Alex Obella)
I look back now and often wonder, 'How did I survive?' I was born and brought up in the northern part of Nigeria, but marriage took me to the southern part. It was easy to get along with everything back then.
Fast forward to thirteen years later, my family and I had to move to the central part of Nigeria due to economic downturn. I wasn't excited about the move, as it meant leaving my Christian community, friends, and acquaintances behind, but I had to go along with the plan. I resigned from my workplace as a result. Although we knew people there, it was difficult to adjust. My worst shock was that I couldn't find a job for almost two years, despite searching tirelessly. The weather was also vastly different.
I became pregnant with my last child in the midst of those difficulties. However, that turned out to be a pleasant surprise in the end. Nursing and nurturing him occupied my time and energies. It was also heartwarming to have a second son. Our plan was to settle in a place where we could manage economically, but things took a turn for the worse, and we struggled financially. We barely scraped by. I had to be strong for my husband and kids, as they struggled in many ways, especially my younger daughter
I attribute my survival to taking things one day at a time. When I focused on the present, I felt better and could appreciate other blessings, like my children and the wonderful people I met. This is significant because even now, when I share my story, people are surprised that I didn't appear to be struggling as much as I was. I held onto the hope of returning to my previous life, even when circumstances seemed dire. The glimmer of hope on the horizon kept me going, and that optimism helped me cope.
Keep what you want in mind and visualize its reality constantly. Have someone to talk to. I consistently shared my emotional struggles with my sister, and she became a strong support system for me. Her reassurances and listening ear helped me feel better at the time. Find a trusted person to talk to, given the circumstances. As a Christian, I also had faith that things would improve. I prayed more fervently than ever before. The experience strengthened my faith for good. I persistently prayed for that need, and it was fulfilled.
My overall experience is not one I would wish on another person, but I am grateful for the kind people I met and the connections I formed. I have learned that even in difficult situations, good and bad can coexist.
